Gunpowder River Fly Fishing Report

The Gunpowder RIver is flowing at an ideal 76 Cfs and 58 degrees F. Leaves are falling and fouling larger nymphs so try a few smallish, #16-18 soft hackles in the riffles. The first frost did little to knock out the crickets and hoppers so terrestrials are still worth a shot. Longer (10-12 ft) and lighter leaders ending in 6 or 7x will make a difference out there. That said, if one is “head hunting” larger fish-go heavy and consider picking up a 5 to 10ft sinking poly leader leader from Airflo and attaching 2 1/2 to 3ft or 4x Flouro tippet to guide the larger patterns through the logjams, bends, and boulder pools. This fish, released in 2019 has likely put on a few inches since it’s last release-go find it!
