The Gunpowder river is flowing at 32 Cfs, is clear, and is 56 F. Tricos in the #24 range are still present in the flats above Falls Rd through Bunkerhill most mornings. Cooler nights have pushed them later into the morning. If you’re starting early this weekend stop in and pick up some reverse hackled tricos and a spool of 7X before you hit the river. Caddis in the #16 range have been coming off midday and have been accounting for a number of fish this week in the riffles. Jason has been out along the Gunpowder this week shooting lots of riffles full of clean gravel and some chunky browns, (pictured above). My neighbor picked up a few smaller but willing browns on Olive wooly buggers just above Masemore as the river dropped from 175 to 34 CFs on Wednesday morning. Biot-Bodied, BWO Para-Spinners tied in Calicoon, NY by Mike Bachkosky are in the muffin tins on the counter and worth a look –especially if you’re headed out West. These flies should be in your Fall box. In the next few weeks try Olives in the upper catch and release section of the Gunpowder River on cloudy, warm days.
Thanks to Steve for the following stream report from earlier in the week:
Theaux,
A quick update on my fishing after I saw you Monday morning…
I didn’t get on the water until about 3:45 and didn’t really see much bug activity…I guess I missed the caddis. I fished the flats below Falls Road as you suggested and landed a nice 10” brown on one of your flying ant patterns, casting to a riser near a partially submerged log. It wasn’t a very aggressive strike, he kind of sipped it in. I also stopped at the Big Falls Road bridge pool and brought a 9” brown to hand on one of those little green parachutes I picked up that morning. I also saw something I have not seen before…at the end of the drift, as I began my haul, and the fly swept across the water, I watched a 6” brown trout chase it for a few feet…I thought it was going to come out of the water after it! It didn’t, but it was fun to watch.Steve Gutowski
