On Tuesday, December 17th the water levels at the dam reduced from 60cfs down to 38cfs. With this, expect a greater fluctuation in the water temperatures. On warmer days you may be able to find some fish rising to midges or blue wing olives, but you can expect them to be rather picky. Long leaders and light tippet are the way to go when targeting these fish.
To cover water, small streamers and light nymph set up is effective in the deeper and faster water. We recommend the classic zebra midge or other midge pattern paired with larger fly like a tungsten jig or a heavy pheasant tail. Keeping flies close to the bottom is key this time of year. Alongside nymphs, keeping those streamers close to the bottom is important as well. Using a sinking line is very helpful in this situation.
Stop in the shop to stock up on wintertime nymphs, dries, and streamers. Check out our new clothing from Patagonia and numerous brand-new sinking lines from Airflo. If you are looking to dial in or learn how to fly fish on the Gunpowder, schedule a guided trip or purchase a guided trip gift certificate. These gift certificates make great Christmas presents and can be used at any time throughout the year. Tight lines!
