Please join us for a fly fishing school. On Sunday, April 10, a Backwater Angler Guide will be teaching a fly fishing school that is ideal for beginners. If you’re planning on fly fishing in Maryland, or anywhere else for that matter, this course is a great introduction to the sport. The school covers knots, casting, gear and fly selection. Class is held from 9:00 AM-12:00 PM. Cost is $125 per person and includes the use of gear. The adage, “Time flies when you’re having fun,” clearly applies in the case of continuing Wally Vait’s On The Fly since 2001. While not necessarily an auspicious year to restart a retail specialty fly shop, many that year found solace and comfort from the happenings of 9/11 along the river. Gunpowder River Stream Report for February 25

The Gunpowder River is clear, flowing at 106 CFs and is 41 degrees F. Keep in mind that as the ice lets go the trails are slippery and still full of mud. It’s a bit safer to bring along a staff or where studs. if you don’t you might end up on your backside looking at this view! Reports this morning of fish on dries earlier in the week point to the fish looking up. Stop in on Friday, Saturday or Monday and see our March Brown parachute style Klinkhammer!. Gunpowder River Early December Stream Report

The Gunpowder River is clear, 47.5 degrees F and flowing at 43.7 CFS. Fish are still midging in the flat water until the sun breaks through the clouds. Approaching wild fish this time of year requires limited wading and long, light leaders. Midge and midge emerges patterns in the #18-22 range will be most productive. Larger streamers will certainly move bigger fish but sometimes they just won’t commit to the fly. Sparse, traditional streamers twitched along the deadfalls, logjams, and bend pools may be more effective and are certainly easier to cast.
