Tricos and a Great Blue Heron Along the Gunpowder River

This video, my first on the site, (thanks Jason) was shot mid-morning in late August and indicates that more folks should be fly fishing late in the season on the Gunpowder river with long leaders, tiny flies and a stealthy approach.

Big Falls Bridge Above Blue Mount Quarry Closing for Repairs

As of August 27, 2007: On September 5, 2007, the contractor is scheduled to start work to replace the bridge on Big Falls Road between Bernoudy and Monkton Roads. The bridge will be closed for approximately 13 months (280 working day contract). This is the bridge over the Gunpowder River near the Bluemount Quarry. Gunpowder River Maryland DNR Electrofishing Survey

No fish in the Gunpowder? Believe Hon! Join Maryland Fisheries Biologists in a rollicking sampling tour of the Gunpowder river. The following schedule will be kept firm. The only exceptions will be if electrofishing conditions are unacceptable (ie. Flooding, muddy water, or torrential rain). Tricos and a Quiet Saturday along the Gunpowder River, Maryland

Yesterday the river dropped to 111 Cfs, an ideal level for wading and fly fishing dry flies only 30 minutes from downtown Baltimore, Maryland. Water temps are 61-64 troughout the catch and release section. Tricos before 10:00 AM from Falls Rd through Masemore Rd Access. Caddis and Hoppers midday are still worth a shot. Great Flow rates for Mid-Atlantic Fly Fisherman along the Gunpowder River

The Gunpowder river is flowing at 156 Cfs, water temps are in the 60-62 F range throughout the catch and release section. We’ve had steady trico hatches from 7:30 till almost 10:00 just about every morning. The barn swallows are happy, the fish are eating, and you should make time to fish before the you have to start shopping for school supplies. Caddis are present along the river about mid-morning in the #16-18 range and are a great fly to switch to after squinting through the trico hatch. By late afternoon, grasshoppers and ants cast dangerously close to the banks should elicit a few strikes. If you’d like …
