The following is a review of the Winston 5 weight LT-5 Rod by Terry Newendorp. Thanks Terry! The best rod I have ever had for all-round trout fishing, and to be able to take on a trip, is the Winston 5wt LT-5. I can handle Western rivers and even the Labrador wind, but the tip softness is so excellent that I can handle small trout (on the Gunpowder or wherever) with grace. I’ve cast the Scott X2s rod in line weights 7-10, and they all load and shoot with less line then the S3S series. I currently use a Scott S3S 8 weight rod for bonefish, stripers, and salmon, but the X2S would be a perfect fit for me personally in a 7 weight for the smaller bone fish and schoolie stripers, I encounter over the course of a year. The LT rod excells at throwing line with ease, but also is soft enough to protect the lighter tippets often required for east coast trout. My favorite is the 8 foot 9 inch 3 weight LT. It is a great dry fly rod, and is a perfect Gunpowder rod. The length is perfect for nymphing pockets or riffles, and the butt section is strong enough to throw a big bugger down and across river.
