Bamboo Fly Fishing Rod Talk in Maryland

Join us on October 18th at 6:00 PM for an informal talk on bamboo fly rods at Backwater Angler. Need Directions? Angus Phillips wrote a nice article titled; “For a Flyfishing Treat, Go No Farther Than the Gunpowder River” that recently appeared in the Washington Post. Gunpowder Guide Stacey Smith was also featured in this article about wild fish and scenic beauty surprisingly close to the DC metropolitan area. Large Terrestrials and Big Streamers are Worth a Shot on the Gunpowder River Tailwater

The river is moving along at a brisk 346 CFs and is now dropping and should level out just under 125 CFs. Flows should drop to a better level for fly fishing for the next day or so and the “fish while you can” axiom might lead some diehards to call in sick midweek. The Gunpowder river is clear and 60 F. Most anglers planning on fly fishing the Gunpowder River would do well to limiting their wading and approach fish from the bank during flows over 300 CFs. I want to begin compiling angler reports about the river user conflicts experienced with floaters and fishermen in the catch and release section from Pretty Boy Dam Rd through Bluemount Rd. Water Levels To Rise By The Weekend

The water level took a downward turn and leveled off at 24 Cfs on Monday morning to allow shocking surveys to take place on the river. The flows will be kept at current levels until surveys are finished on Wednesday the 26th of September. Flows should return to higher levels by Thursday the 27th, based on water needs in Loch Raven Reservoir.
