The river is flowing at 37 Cfs, is low , clear and cold at 58 F. Loch Raven is spilliing over, so we’ll see low water in the river for awhile–at least until it rains. Sporadic caddis and sulphurs are still about. Try #14 caddis and emergers paired with a #16-18 Sulphur in shaded riffles and hold on. With 95 F forecasted for downtown Baltimore today, fly fishing the sulphur spinner fall for wild brown trout is worth a shot. Rusty and para-spinners in a #14-16 on 7-8X in flats and edges should account for a few fish looking up.Mornings have been productive with small caddis …
Thanks to Scott for the following Stream Report: Theaux, Hey guys I saw your most recent stream report today but not before I hit the river last night where I stepped in to some unexpectedly cold water. I parked at the upper lot and went toward the dam. It was flowing pretty good but was easily manageable. I did not get to the river until 7:30. Sulphers started buzzing around at about 8pm, but the fish still were not looking up. At 8:30 they finally took my size 16 rusty spinner. I landed 6 browns of varying sizes, all in the same stretch of water, …

With two changes in flow this week on Wednesday and Thursday, enough water has moved off the lip of the reservoir, to take spillover out of the equation for Gunpowder river flow and temperature. We should return to a more predictable late afternoon to early evening sulphur hatch shortly. In the interim, we have plenty of cool water, moving briskly through the Gunpowder river. Small streamers to imitate the Gizzard shad …

Memorial day weekend is over. Water flow on the Gunpowder river is 84 CFs and clear . Morning water temperatures at Falls Rd are still in the 63-64 F range, and afternoon Gunpowder river water temps have been on the rise. Yesterday afternoon a water temperature of 72 F was reported just above the high trail pool. Further downstream, at Big Falls Rd, a reading of 70F was recorded this morning, a little more than 6 miles below the dam. Which prompted a few questions from anglers this weekend that can be summarized as: What’s going on with the water? To answer this loaded question …
