April Fly Fishing Report on the Gunpowder

The Gunpowder is steady around the 200 cfs mark and is warming fast to the mid 50’s as we get some warm spring sunshine hitting the water. The river has a strong green color owing to continued spillover from Prettyboy Dam.

The fishing has been inconsistent as of late, midges are working the best, zebra midges in the riffles & runs. For surface try our Mikes 20-22 snowshoe cream midges or griffith’s gnats, in calm water on 6-7x. Not many Mayfly Duns seen yet, the occasional one here and there. Stoneflies skated downstream can entice an opportunistic fish. With the water having this green color to it and water temperature warming, streamer fishing has improved, particularly early or late. Won’t be long til the April Mayflies start coming off, keep a look out for Hendrickson’s & Quill Gordon’s.
