Water Levels in the Gunpowder are not likely to change, at least until we get some measurable rain and folks start conserving water, so get out there and try your luck. We had four guide trips on the river on Columbus day with great catches reported. Because of the high flows, the river was flowing at 299 CFs at 58 F this morning, and a few adjustments are in order to get out there and be successful. 1. Limit your wading. 2. This morning the river is flowing at 236 CFs and is 60 F and clear. Caddis and large hoppers, as well as pheasant tail nymphs and caddis pupas have been accounting for a number of good sized fish. This morning a happy angler from the Philly area stopped in the shop after fishing the Falls Rd section and reported a 19-20″ brown With a gate change in the works, expect the river to move from 236 Cfs today to 300CFs to 310 CFs by this afternoon. Another enormous Gunpowder brown trout showed itself to take a nymph presented by Gunpowder River Guide Jeff Lewatowski. The big trout struggled in every possible way, and despite swimming under numerous rocks and making deep runs was successfully landed on 6X tippet. The brown measured out at twenty inches and Jeff estimated the weight of the fish at four pounds. This video still photo is from an upcoming video short of the exciting catch. The river is moving along at a brisk 346 CFs and is now dropping and should level out just under 125 CFs. Flows should drop to a better level for fly fishing for the next day or so and the “fish while you can” axiom might lead some diehards to call in sick midweek. The Gunpowder river is clear and 60 F. Most anglers planning on fly fishing the Gunpowder River would do well to limiting their wading and approach fish from the bank during flows over 300 CFs. The water level took a downward turn and leveled off at 24 Cfs on Monday morning to allow shocking surveys to take place on the river. The flows will be kept at current levels until surveys are finished on Wednesday the 26th of September. Flows should return to higher levels by Thursday the 27th, based on water needs in Loch Raven Reservoir. 

Fall weather has arrived in North Baltimore County. The morning’s air temps began rising from 44 degrees at 7:30 am and river temps should remain below 60 degrees in the upper river. A bass angler on Prettyboy reservoir stopped in to comment that the surface temp on the reservoir dropped 8 degrees from last week. Water temperatures south of the confluence of Little Falls are now at safe fishing temps to the Sparks Rd access. Float trips have accounted for some nice fish outside the catch and release section.
