Trico Hatch on the Gunpowder River, Maryland

The Gunpowder is flowing at 115 Cfs, (an ideal level for dry fly fishing and wading), and we’ll see an increase in flow through the weekend in the 150 to 160 Cfs range, (think streamers and large terrestrials). Currently water temperature is 61 F at Falls Rd, Tricos are present from the Dam through Monkton, and Kingfishers are trilling away from Masemore to Falls Rd. Most of the trikes are in the #22-24 range, so plan on using 7 or 8x and try not to set the hook too quickly. Caddis sized #16-18, are worth skating midday through the evening hours along the edges of …

Gunpowder River Full of Tricos, Tubers and Wild Fish

Fly fishing along the Gunpowder has been challenging this week. Lots of tubers and boaters have sent more than a few folks into the shop muttering. Fly fishing early and late might be the right approach if you tend to fall into the muttering group. If you can tolerate the “other” traffic, try swinging a nymph or two after the boats have passed and you might find a surprised wild brown trout on the other end of your line. The river is flowing at 90 Cfs, water temps are in the 56 to 58 F range and we’ve had numerous reports from anglers connecting with …

The North Platte Fly Fishing Report from Encampment, Wyoming

The fishing on the North Platte River during the week of July 8th was excellent. My Dad and I were fishing the river just upstream a few miles from the town of Encampment, Wyoming. The flows on the river were extremely low, making a float trip impossible. However, wading in the low flows of the Platte provided great action. The bugs were everywhere during the entire week. Each morning I would find at least a couple large golden stone casings on each boulder inthe river. These were about size #6 or #8. Caddis were hatching along with PMDs in #14-16. The trico hatch was tremendous eachmorning …

Great Summer Flows Spell Great Fly Fishing along the Gunpowder River in Monkton, Maryland

For those of you watching the stream gauge, we have positively wonderful flows along the Gunpowder river at 125 Cfs, the larger volume of water is also cooler than it was last week, (less time for sunlight to warm it up) from the catch and release section through Monkton at 54 F. Large flies can really help trick fish when covering water at higher flows. Terrestrials like hoppers, sized #8-12 and large foam beetles, in the #10-12 range are worth a shot. Don stopped in today and reported new Graffitti at Bunkerhill Rd access along the rock ledge pool. If you witness any vandalism or …

Fly fishing this Week? Bigger Flows on the Gunpowder River near Baltimore, Maryland Await…

The river is flowing at 86 Cfs, is clear, and 54 F at Falls Rd. Mornings have been very productive with lots of fish taking caddis in the #16-18 range, and small hoppers sized #10-12 from Masemore Rd upstream. A dozen or so large brown stonefly cases were brought in last week from the lower river. A few Cahills have also been present but not in enough of a concentration to call it a “hatch.” Nevertheless the fish are looking up and if you have a few stimulators left in your Western box, give ’em a try. We’ve been using lots of 7x, even with …

Big Gunpowder Falls River Smallmouth on a Fly Rod

The Catch and release section is still relatively cool but with mid 90’s forecasted through this week, we could use a bit more flow. Currently the river is at 40 Cfs and temps at Falls Rd are in the low to mid 50’s throughout the day. Mornings have been especially productive with large attractor dries like stimulators and trudes in the #8-12 range. Midday small caddis emergers like zing-wings, cdc pupas and and x-caddis in the #14-16 range should work fine in the riffles. Low water is typical this time of year as is less pressure on the river. Many anglers over this past weekend …
