Caddis on the Gunpowder River Hon, Sulphur Mayflies are just starting…

Dry fly fishing along the Gunpowder river is outstanding.Water temps are 56-58 F and the river is gin clear and flowing at 98 Cfs. Caddis are coming off mid-morning till about 2:00 PM from Falls Rd through York Rd. We’re starting to see a few Sulphur mayflies in the #14-16 range. We just received some beautiful sulphur emergers and spinners from Mike Bachkosky and yes, you should be fishing right now, but if you can’t leave work early, try the river later this evening. Flyfishing for Shad in Maryland

Thanks to Chris and Scott for the following reports: Dear Backwater, Just a quick report on the Shad Run—we have been fishing near the pumping station at Susquehanna State park each evening this week to enjoy the incredible shad run that is at its peak. When the river is falling, large wild brown trout start eating their bretheren, so try small, sparsely dressed streamers along log jams and cut banks. The river is clear above Masemore Rd., so soft hackles in the #10-12 range and large bead …

The river is falling from 152 Cfs and will be in excellent shape for the weekend, water temps are still cool at 51 F. No word on Caddis yet but they’re close to popping, so we might not need to wait till mothers day as long as things continue to warm up a bit. This afternoon a young man stopped in the shop to report that there were, “lots of rising fish at Masemore”. It’s very likely that he was seeing fish taking spinners this afternoon, (picture by Jason du Pont below) Riffles can be very productive during this hatch. We also had a number of …

Flyfishing in Maryland? Hendricksons Afoot…

The water is still on the cool side, and water temps in mid 40’s have slowed the fishing down a bit. The river is clear and flowing at 110 Cfs. We’re just starting to hear about a few Hendricksons about…but this week fish have been more apt to take emergers and larger than usual nymphs, (#10-14) than dries. This just in… the Fentons, a father and son team that drove down from Monmouth County, NJ, (along the shore) stopped in to report a half dozen fish on a #14 Adams parachute..
