Leaves aplenty…and quite a few 10-14″ fish

I heard from several anglers over the weekend that they had great luck with dark bodied caddis emergers, (like x-caddis in a #16). The water temp is 52 F and is clear. Most of the fish reported this past weekend were in the 10-14″ range, with a quite few Rainbows in the mix.The river will be down around 34 CFs until around 2 PM as DNR spends another morning counting fish.If you’re planning on fishing today I’d suggest you give the lower river a try with streamers.

Up and down…

Dry fly purists should still rely on #18 -20 Olives and #16 dark bodied Caddis through the weekend. If you’ve looked at the gauge lately it’s been up and down today but will be stable through the weekend with another drop planned for Monday and Tuesday as the Fisheries managers finish up their survey.

Midges and Olives…

A few dreary days have proven to be good for the fish and the fisherman. The river is low and clear and the dry fly fishing has been exceptional in the upper catch and release section. A ten to twelve foot leader ending in 6-7x. If streamers are more to your liking, try the stretch between Bunkerhill and Big falls road with a lite bright zonker or a big olive Wooly Bugger and watch out for the log jams.

Peacock Caddis and Olives…

The river was absolutely beautiful today.Flow was 113 Cfs, low, clear and about 54 F. I fished three access points and saw a total of two -yes that’s 2 cars at Falls Rd, Masemore, and Big Falls combined. Fish were rising to Cream Midges at Falls Rd. Olives at Masemore and Caddis along Big Falls. A 12-13″ Wild Brown took a dry towards the end of the day with abandon and jumped four times before it was released. I can’t think of a reason not to be fishing this time of year–can you?

Grand Slam on the Gunpowder….

The river is clear and a little low at 109Cfs. Finding a reason not to go fishing is getting harder after reading reports like this… “”Went out Tuesday 10/05 after talking to Rocky in the shop. He put us on to a fly which proved to be a killer pattern just below the dam. I landed 5 fish, not one less than 10 inches. Aaron Holmes had an even better day fishing from shore, landing 7 I think and getting a grand slam. The fish were tough, too! Fought hard. Really let me know when my knots were suspect (I could have had an even …
