Tricos and Terrestrials on the Gunpowder

Trico’s are beginning to hatch and clear, cold, 50 degree (F) water is flowing down the Gunpowder. Fishing has been good in the mornings with dark nymphs and small midge patterns. Ants and beetles will work well throughout the day. With the beginning of the Trico emergence, stop in and grab a threader set (an easy way to tie on the tiny patterns) and a pair of flip-focals. Also make sure to check out our Trico patterns tied for us by Mike Bachkosky. 7X tippet and very long leaders will be necessary to fool the wary yet hungry wild trout.

Peace, Quiet, and a Few Wild Fish on the Gunpowder River.

Thanks to Chris for this stream report from July 20th. Theaux, Cosmic night on the Gunpowder! This was one of those evenings when all elements came together to result in classic dry fly fishing. As the fog rolled its way down river it chased the last of the tubers down-stream—I could hear their shouts and groans become swallowed and muted by the mist. Not a rising trout in sight. At approximately 7:30 the fog lifted to reveal the hidden world beneath the water–Rising trout came out to feed! With the water as low as it is, I took advantage by finding trout stacked up in …

Idaho Fly Fishing Report from the Snake and Henry’s Fork.

Thanks to Jessica and Brett for this Idaho fishing report and photos from July 13th. Hi Theaux, We had a great Idaho trip – and I had a great time fishing. Caught rainbows and a small brown trout this week. Water levels were record highs which made it tough to fish most streams (lots of mending the line!). -Jessica Well, Jess and I are back from out Idaho trip. I can assure you that it is “all that” and then some. We had an outstanding vacation, although all the running around out there wore us out pretty bad. Selfishly I have to say that the …

Summer Fly Fishing on the Gunpowder

The river is flowing at 35 CFS and is 55 degrees at Falls Rd. Fishing has been productive throughout the day. Ants and caddis have been go-to patterns in the mornings and afternoons, while small midge and pheasant-tail nymphs have been working during mid-day. Tricos have just started coming off and the fish will begin eating them in the next week. A long leader ending in 7X has been the key to fooling the wary fish in low water. Fishing the upper sections of the river is a good idea if you want to fish pocket water and deep pools. Stop in and pick up …

Heat Wave Fly Fishing On The Gunpowder

The heat this week is approaching triple digits, but the Gunpowder River is still well below the threshold where trout become stressed by warm water. The upper reaches are still below 50 degrees in the morning, and may climb into the sixties in the mid to lower accesses of the catch and release sections. Areas below Bluemount Rd are likely to be too warm for fishing, so consider taking a water temp before fishing. Generally the trout become less active once the water gets into the 68-70 degree range, so fishing farther up river will be far more productive, and less stressful on the trout. …

Gunpowder River Tricos, Flying Ants and Beetles…

The river is low at 34 CFs, clear and 58 to 61F by mid-afternoon. Look for active fish in riffles and shade lines and stop by the shop and give the muffin tins a once over-we have plenty of terrestrials and caddis on the counter and are always happy to lend a hand in suggesting the most productive access points along the river. Thanks to Josh Reider for the stream report and photos: The Gunpowder is at 34 CFS and fishing at this level has its advantages. Fish will be stacked in deeper pools and riffles, making it easy to see and target individual fish. …
