Winter Fly Tying Classes in the Forecast

With rain, sleet and snow in the forecast, we’ve been busy marking up the shop calendar with tying classes. Our Gunpowder Guides teach these classes in Monkton, Maryland with an emphasis on fun! Maryland Trout in the Classroom Update

Here is a quick update from our trout in the Classroom schools. –all of the eggs have hatched and the alevins are hanging on. Soon they’ll be swimming around in the wide world of a 55 gallon tank. Checking tank pH and water temperature were the first orders of business upon delivery of the fertilized trout eggs. Backwater Angler has volunteered some time to help PPTU bring TU’s Trout in the Classroom Program to schools in Baltimore and Harford counties. We visited Odyssey School, Lutherville Laboratory, and Bel Air High school late last week to check tank conditions and to drop off fertilized trout eggs to be reared in the classroom. All tanks are equipped with chillers that keep the water nice and cold. The tanks are also tested for pH and ammonia levels frequently during the rearing process. Every year I always make time to explore smaller streams throughout the region in search of wild trout. Fishing small streams, especially for the first time, can lead to incredibly scenic places where few trout are pressured by anglers.
