Streamers and Higher Flows on the Gunpowder River

Thanks to Craig for his Gunpowder River stream report from September 7: Theaux Took your lead on the streamers yesterday – 7 fish in an hour and easily missed as many – some ferocious hits as well. Flow was perfect – went early and fished from 7 to 9, left when everyone else showed up :) Tight lines Craig

Fly Fishing Grand Prix Labor Day Weekend in Baltimore

The Gunpowder is flowing at 121 CFs and is 55 F and clear. The river is at a great level for wading. Tricos are in the spider webs and the flying ants are around mid-day. Beetles and hoppers are still working in the backeddies. With slightly higher flows over the weekend, streamers are also a good bet. Longer leaders in the 12ft 6x and 7x range will help keep the Tricos drifting at the right speed among the leaves. Fish are spooky but in the upper catch and release section. Water temps have been below 60 F in the first two miles of tailwater. River temps have been warming up a bit downstream of the catch and release area. Low water and small flies (mostly cream midges and a few BWO’s means that long leaders are a must! Terrestrial fishing is still the most effective way to cover …

For the rest of the Fall, the shop will be closed every Wednesday including the 15th, additionally, we will be closed this Tuesday, the 14th. We apologize for any inconvenience and will have regular hours the rest of the week. River levels have been in the 50 Cfs range. The stream gauge has been a little wonky during the recent USGS software upgrade. Beetles are still working just fine along the Masemore Rd stretch. Hoppers are a good bet and can be fished with a reverse-hackled trico just behind them. With school crazies just around the corner, fish now! You’ll be buying new pencils soon …
