Cooler air temps and changing leaves are here, so the Fall fishing has begun. The larger wild brown above is also indicative of Fall fishing on the Gunpowder. This brown measured over fifteen inches and didn’t take a big streamer, but instead took a size 20 midge larva on 5X tippet. I fished a few hours in the rain, and the day after the big storm. The browns were aggressive in the mid-river areas (stained water) after the storm, especially on caddis larva and pupa patterns. Outside of the saturated ground and multitude of leaves scattered en masse along the trails, –a sight we don’t typically see until mid-October, the Upper Gunpowder Falls River is not any worse off. Restigouche Atlantic Salmon Report

Thanks to Scott Burns for the following report from a mid-September trip to the Restigouche river in pursuit of Atlantic Salmon: Hi Theaux. Returned last week from a trip to northern New Brunswick, where I caught the salmon in the photo (and several others) on the Islander reel you sold me a while back. The river was up nicely after rain from the late stages of Hurricane Earl, and the fish really turned on. Following is a bio-sketch from the speaker: Ron Klauda currently serves as Director of the Monitoring and Non-tidal Assessment Division in Maryland’s Department of Natural Resources. Thanks to Mark Noble for the nice stream report and photo from a guide trip with Backwater Angler guide Dave Smith. Theaux, I’m sorry I didn’t have a chance to stop by the shop when I was done fishing today. Although it’s not too surprising, I never can tear myself away from a river until it is absolutely necessary. I really enjoyed fishing with Dave today. Fly Fishing The Frying Pan River,Colorado:Day 3

On my third day on the Frying Pan I fell into my routine of catching the morning midge hatch up in the flat below Ruedi Dam. On the previous days I found success with zebra midges, RS2s and DMC (embroidery floss) midge patterns. There was a ton of shucks floating on the surface from the hatching midges, including some midges still trapped in their shuck. The adults were large, a size 18 black body midge, with a gray wing.
