After several days of spillover and rising temps, (and great discourse with fisheries and the City-many thanks to Gene and Charlie) a recent gate change will cool things down for a while. Expect to see flows in the 100 to 150 Cfs range, a great level for fishing. Cooler water temps in the low to mid 50’s will be welcome after quite a few days in the high 60’s. Be sure to bring plenty of weighted nymphs along and plan on swinging soft hackles through the riffles. Small, (18-22) elk hair caddis and caddis emergers are great searching patterns on bright days. The river is low, clear and warm at 66 F.Midday fishing has been tough. Water levels have been wonderfully stable during the recent rains. Ideal flows of 65CFs to 185 Cfs have been maintained even after heavy local rains. Currently the river is at 105 CFs, is clear and beautiful. Water temps, still in the high 50’s, make for happy fish. #14-16 Sulphur Emergers, Duns, and Spinners, (after 7:00 PM) have been producing. The river is alive in the morning with lots of Caddis activity. Soft hackles and emergers have been working from Bunkerhill through Falls Rd. Sulphurs are just starting, a traditional sulphur wet paired with a soft hackle caddis should work fine. Water temp is at 59 F, so we’re seeing some very active fish. This morning I was greeted by a smiling regular who was getting an early start on the caddis hatch. He reported releasing a 20 incher yesterday and is still smiling and fishing the Gunpowder.
