Terrestrials, caddis and midges….

The river is low, clear, and cool at 55 F. Don’t put your terrestrials away yet. Ants, hoppers and beetles are great searching patterns through the afternoon. We just brought in some wonderful foam & deerhair hoppers and crickets that will float anything short of a sparkplug-sized nymph. Several enthusiastic reports of small caddis coming off mid-morning to early afternoon.Bring up your midges box if you’re planning on fishing after 4 PM. A Renegade or Griffith’s Gnat sized #18-22 should work fine. Long leaders are still the rule , so plan on fishing long,(over 10ft) and light 6x and 7x, especially with the midges. Note: …

Cool Water…

Long leaders are the best defense against spooky fish on bright days. Flows have been low and clear and water temps from 55 to 58 F make for a short day if you are planning on wet wading. Quite a few fish over 14″ have been reported this week, including a 9″ Brookie just above Masemore. Small foam and deer hair beetles sized #18-20 behind Elk hair Caddis in a #12-14 have been moving lots of fish above Falls Rd. Note: School is just around the corner, get out while you can…

Ants, Beetles Hoppers…

Low, (111 Cfs), clear, (gin) and cold, (55 F) water has made more than a few anglers consider a 1, 2 or 3wt rod for Summer work along the Gunpowder. Long leaders are the rule here and a 10-12 footer ending in 6x or lighter is a good starting point. Ants, beetles and hoppers continue to produce along shade covered banks. Sizes vary, and fishing two dries is a good way to trick wary fish. Nymphing in the morning has been very productive from Bunkerhill access upstream. Try a small prince nymph or pheasant tail in a #16-18. Streamer fishing is always tough this time …

Rogue Sulphur Spinner Fall….

I’ve seen it with my own eyes! A #20 Sulphur Spinner was brought into the shop this morning. It was collected above Falls Rd last night after 7:30 PM.Reports of a steady spinner fall with lots of rising fish followed… Flows are nice and low, the water is clear and between 55 and 58 throughout the catch and release section. We’re typically starting to think Tricos about now but it just goes to show that there are always a few latecomers to a good party. Beetles and small caddis are still accounting for lots of dry fly action. With three guides on the water with happy …

Thundershowers, powerful fish and one that’s not taking the river for granted…

High water has made dry fly fishing interesting, think about using big Western attractor patterns like a Madame X or Double Humpy sized #8-12 from Bunkerhill to York Rd. Terrrestrials like ants, beetles and small hoppers, (Ed Shenk’s Letort pattern in a #12 is one of my favorites) have been very effective from Bunkerhill to Masemore. Up top, above Falls Rd. Large Nymphs, like #12 Copper John and traditional streamers like Black Nosed Dace and Grey Ghosts sized #6-8 have accounted for some bruisers. The city started pulling water last Thursday from 55 ft so the water temps were on the cool side, between 52- …

26 incher raises a few eyebrows…

The telephone has been ringing off the hook this morning. The river is on the rise after 3-5 inches of rain locally, Water temps are in the low 60’s throughout the catch and release section so bank on seeing lots of active fish. Word is getting out about the 26″ fish that took a Caddis on the 4th of July in the catch and release section. No fish story-Gene stopped in on the afternoon of the 4th to say that he helped the lucky angler measure the fish before its release. Masemore to the dam will fish fine as the water drops -this morning the …
