Maryland Brook Trout Fly Fishing

Maryland has ample brook trout fishing opportunities in the western region of the state. The small mountain streams that contain these native trout may only be six to twelve feet wide and less than a foot deep in many areas. The brook trout can grow to twelve inches and many streams have good populations of eager trout. Exploring small streams can uncover larger pools and deep narrow bends where larger trout hold versus the pocket water and riffles. Gear includes one to three weight rods with a length no longer than seven feet. I use a Scott Fiberglass 6 foot one weight to load quick …

Fly Fishing Maryland? Low Water & Streamers on the Gunpowder River

The Gunpowder River is clear and flowing at 26 Cfs, and temps are hovering in the mid 40’s. Bead head stonefly patterns followed by a Red Butt have been effective in the stretch above Falls Rd. Riffles are now holding more fish post spawn and a streamer along the log jams is a good way to stay warm and cover a lot of water. Downstream of Little Falls,  the river is flowing at 76 Cfs. Larger rainbows are still being caught on #14-16  zug bugs and #12-14 princes in the 5 fish a day stretch from the gas line below Corbett Rd through Lower Glencoe. During low flows, …

Big Gunpowder River Rainbow

The river is low at 34 Cfs, clear and 48F. The wind has made fishing tough the past few days. Fish are still responding to nymphs and streamers in riffles and pools. The lower river downstream of Bluemount Rd has more flow and has been easier to fish. Our latest report and picture comes from our shop intern Max. Enjoy! Hey Theaux, I was fishing below Monkton rd. access at 2 PM on Sunday when this monster fish inhaled my black wooly bugger. It fought for about five minutes, and it bent my 5 WT rod all the way to the grip! Another fisherman was on …

Steelhead Fly Fishing Video on the Salmon River, New York

When the indicator paused and I came tight on a fish, it was unlike any feeling I’ve had chasing fish with a fly rod in a freshwater river. These fish surprised me with the raw power they had when they made the reel sing and knocked your knuckles on blistering run after run. When a fish was first hooked the violent surface eruptions and head shaking was heart stopping. The thought “fish!” hits you when the line comes tight then a combination fear, uncertainty and quick reaction take over. The speed and strength of the fish in the river made everything happen so quickly. The …

Steelhead Fly Fishing on the Salmon River, New York

For some unknown reason Steelhead fishing managed to stay off my fishing To Do List, until recently. I loaded the Mariner Hybrid with my heavier Scott rods, a big net, vise, 2x heavy scud hooks and tons of egg yarn. Patagonia Capilene layers were essential to cold weather fishing along with heavy socks and micro puff clothing. Matt Devlin and I made the seven hour drive to Altmar, New York on twelve gallons of gas on Sunday November 10th. We arrived that afternoon to find 60-80 people lined elbow to elbow in the first 100 yards of river below the town bridge. I am not …

Fish or Leaf? along the Gunpowder River

The Gunpowder river is low, clear and 48F. If you’re nymphing the most important question this week has been;  fish or leaf? Quite a few large fish have been reported this week and anglers are stalking fish from the plunge pool below the dam all the way to Upper Glencoe Rd. You’ll find more water, more flow and less pressure below Bluemount Rd. Black flies  in the #18-20 range are just starting above Falls Rd, and if you’re dead set on fishing smaller dries, try an Olive sparkle dun in a #20-22 from Masemore through York Rd. Pools full of log jams and deadfalls are great …
