Fly Fishing Maryland? Try the Gunpowder River

After a rainy Friday morning, the Gunpowder river is flowing at a near ideal 75 Cfs, is clear and 56 F. Olives and caddis from mid-morning through the afternoon have accounted for a few fish this week. If you’re after wild browns X-caddis and small olives are a good bet. Mickey Finns have been very productive on guide trips. Capt. Jeff Lewatowski was guiding Steffi Hone in the Catch and release area of the Gunpowder river this week during low flows, (31 Cfs) and was all smiles after this fish was safely released. We hope to leave the DC area in about 3 years for this awsome state. I fished the Frying Pan River, Roaring …

Blue Winged Olives, Caddis and Threatening Rain

The Gunpowder river is flowing at 32 Cfs, is clear and 56 F. The recent rains have made things interesting today in the Hereford zone. If you’d rather fish dries, Blue Winged Olives and Caddis have been working this week. Riffles emptying into flats have been the best areas to prospect. Long leaders in the 6 and 7x range are still needed to trick wild fish in low …

Fly Fishing Wyoming’s Snake, Hoback and Gros Venture Rivers

Thanks to Josh for the stream report and pictures from Jackson Hole, Wyoming. I just got back from Jackson. Incredible. We threw size #2-5 hoppers with a soft hackle as the dropper. We caught so many fish that a had to replace three leaders in one day. Did I mention that we used 3X tippet? In all I probaly caught 60 some fish. We generally fished three rivers, the Snake, the Hoback, and the Gros Venture. However many other people fished Flat Creek which had so much fishing pressure that we decided to avoid it. I would have to say that the best river for …

Fly Fishing in Western Maryland

Western Maryland has some great fly fishing opportunities in remote areas and for gorgeous wild trout. We answer many emails and phone calls inquiring about the fishing in this region. The latest follow up report came from Nick S. who just returned from his first trip out to WMD. Jason, Thanks for the info and pointing me in the right directions. As for the fishing, it was fun and humbling. I did not get as much quality time on the water as I was hoping, but was impressed by both the Savage and NB in terms of beautiful settings, variety of fishing situations, and quality …
