Great fly fishing, cold clear water and fishing reports from the Gunpowder Falls

The gauge is acting up. Rest assured the flow has not changed. We’re still looking at 32-34 Cfs. The river is still cold, clear and is beautiful.Beetle, caddis and large streamers have been producing some rather large fish. Thanks to Jake, Scott, Mike and John for the following stream reports: From 9/8: Message: just a quck fishing report. Fished the gunpowder from Evna road today–the area around the first bend after the dam. Got to the water around 9 am and had no luck with nymphs. Switched over to an Adams/(dun?) around 10 as the fish started rising. Landed 3 nice browns from 9-12 inches, …

Mighty good fishing in low water…

Numerous calls and emails have been answered this week with the same words… come on up the waters fine. Currently the river is clear, low and flowing at 32-35 CFs. Water temperatures are between 53 and 56 F throughout the catch and release area. I gave a talk for the Rapidan TU/FFF in Warrenton, VA this past Wednesday and I’m sure that we’ll see some new faces in the next few weeks–and that’s about two hours from the wild Browns in the Gunpowder Falls. Really folks you don’t need to wait until Spring to go fishing again as the folllowing stream reports attest: Hello Theaux, …

Clear, low, cold water, empty parking lots after Ernesto…Priceless

The parking lots are empty, the river is low and clear at 32-36 Cfs,and it’s nice and overcast. Water temperature are in the low to mid 50’s and you should be fishing right now. Bwo’s, small caddis and parachute adams on long, fine leaders make for great fishing. Have a hard time turning over long leaders? Try a 9ft 6x Flourocarbon leader. Fly fishing the Gunpowder river….more fun than the tilt a whirl at the fair. Note: We do sell rainjackets…

Low cool water, lots of fish stacked up…

With the water at 32 CFs expect to cover a good stretch of water before you find fish. That said, the water temperature is still in the high 50’s so the fish are in good shape if a little skittish.Terrestrials and small caddis are still moving fish. Now is a good time to fish the pools and tailouts above Falls Rd. If you find deep runs and undercuts, spend some time trying bead head nymphs and small streamers. Fishing upstream is better with low water conditions so walk the trails down and fish back up.Thanks to Scott for the following stream report. Hi guys. Fished …

Low water, spooky fish..try the lower river…

We have the lowest water of the season, make it the past few seasons, at 32 CFs, the water temp is warming a bit and it’s tough to get close to pooled up fish-even with 7x. Abandon all hopes of floating the river in any device. The fish are spooky throughout the catch and release section, so give the lower river a look. Access points such as Bluemount road , Monkton, Upper and Lower Glencoe and Sparks are certainly worth trying. Little Falls joins the Gunpowder at Bluemount and adds a good bit of water to the river at the confluence. Streamers such as black …
