The return of the Sulphurs…

The river is alive in the morning with lots of Caddis activity. Soft hackles and emergers have been working from Bunkerhill through Falls Rd. Sulphurs are just starting, a traditional sulphur wet paired with a soft hackle caddis should work fine. Water temp is at 59 F, so we’re seeing some very active fish. Flow is at 73 CFS, so we have lots of riffles and flats to cover for a few stream reports from other anglers this past week… Message: Theaux, I’m the smiling face that greeted you the other morning, the long haired young guy who comes in the shop at least once …

Hendricksons, Caddis and big fish…

This morning I was greeted by a smiling regular who was getting an early start on the caddis hatch. He reported releasing a 20 incher yesterday and is still smiling and fishing the Gunpowder. Flows are 120 Cfs and still dropping…Water temps are still in the high 50’s and there seems to be, dare I say it, no end in sight to great fishing..what are you doing this weekend?Following is a stream report from Jeff, another regular that connected last Saturday it reads: Message: Theaux, Today I caught a 16″ brown, the biggest fish I have pulled from the Gunpowder, moments later I broke that …

Hendricksons and Quill Gordons…

The river is low and clear at 66 CFs. Water temps in the high 50s-today we measured 57 F have made the fish very active and the rain in the forecast should help anglers get closer to fish this weekend. Expect the river to move a little this weekend and drop just as quickly. Some of our best days this past year on guidetrips were during and just after a spot of rain. Hendricksons in a #14-16 and quite a few Quill Gordons in #10-12 have been accounting for some nice fish. Soft hackles sized #12-16 and small bead head nymphs #16-18 in the riffles in …

Hendricksons, Hendricksons, Hendricksons…

If you’re still letting the weather forecast dictate your fishing time you will be hearing about how wonderful the fishing has been without experiencing it firsthand. The river is at 85 CFs, clear and warming at about 52 F. We’ve had good mid-day hatches of Hendricksons with many of these early mayflies returning to the water as spinners by 4:00 PM. Plenty of midge activity is still happening above Falls Rd. Olives are a good bet through the weekend. As long as it warms up a bit and we have cloud cover the fishing will be outstanding. Earlier in the week we had a group …

Excellent early season fishing awaits…Black Fly Redux..

It’s still hard for me to to believe that we’ve had such great early season fishing during the past two weeks. The river is at a nice steady 76 Cfs , ( we typically fish it from 55 to 225 CFs so if it moves a little over the weekend it should still be clear and very wadeable-just bring your rainjacket along. We’ve had warmer water this week after a gate change from the 55 foot level to the 10 foot level. With a little spillover, the river temps are now in the mid 40’s and climbing–think active fish!!!We’ve heard many enthusiastic reports of between 1/2 …

Black Fly Bonanza…

If you listened to the weather last night and decided to pass on the Gunpowder you should feel cheated. The river is in great shape. Flows are stable at a great level for wading and the water is clear. We’ve heard from several anglers this afternoon that today was, “the best day they’ve had in a while”. We had two guides out with happy clients today that picked up plenty of wild fish on black fly and midge patterns. Small caddis and henryville specials used as point flies helped folks stay in contact with the tiny patterns. The water is warming upo and we should …
