Stream Report From Colorado’s Yampa River

Thanks to Terry for the August stream report from Colorado’s Yampa River, Hi Theaux: I had a great week of fishing in Colorado Aug 8-12. For the last 10-12 years, I always try to catch a rainbow on my birthday in August, and it isn’t always easy to find reliable water out West to have great fishing. Over the last 6 years, I have found that the waters around Steamboat Springs are high, clear and trout-abundant around mid-August. Olives, Caddis and Wild Fish Looking Up from Log Jams

The Gunpowder is flowing at 141 CFs and is 60 F. Caddis have been all the rage in the catch and release section this week. With no shortage of bright, slippery leaves scattered along the trails, now is the time to change out the studs in your wading shoes. Zebra midges fished deep behind Copper Johns have been accounting for a number of fish released above Falls Rd. Bwo’s are still about most mornings between Masemore and Bunkerhill and are best imitated with snowshoe rabbit patterns. Gunpowder River Leaf Dance, BWO’s and Streamers…

The Gunpowder River is clear, flowing at 164 Cfs, and is 61.5 F. With high winds in the forecast, a leaf dance is eminent along the river–bright leaves drop to the surface, coloring the Gunpowder in kaleidoscope fashion. All of those pretty leaves can make the dry fly fishing a bit challenging so be sure to bring a camera or sketchbook along to mollify any need to be “productive” out there. Grasshoppers can still found in the Bunkerhill meadow, so imitating the last of large terrestrials is still worth a shot. Small Blue Winged Olives are about in the mornings.
