Good Cold Weather Fishing On The Gunpowder River, Maryland

Ah…fishing in the snow. Other anglers must like fishing during a good snowfall, as much as I do, because I saw a few cars in a couple different lots along the river yesterday.  When the temps finally hit thirty degrees I had to wet a line, and the falling snow was a bonus. I checked water temps at Falls Rd, 37 degrees, and the Monkton stretch was iced over at the Bridge. Most of the smaller creeks in the region are just thawing out after last weeks frigid temps, while the Gunpowder is ice free through the C & R water. In two hours …

Winter Streamer Fishing along the Gunpowder

Conditions are, shall we say, invigorating along the Gunpowder river. Water temp is 39 F, flow is good-the gauge is icing, but the Gunpowder river is still flowing in the 70-80 CFs range. Streamers are continuing to account for a number of fish between Masemore and Big Falls Rds. Stonefly nymphs like Red Butts and Princes sized #16-18 behind brighter patterns are a better bet from Masemore though Falls Rd. We’ve seen very few stoneflies this week but they are just around the corner. Stay tuned… Thanks to Mike Smith for the following stream report and photo, Hi guys, Fished from York Road to about …

January Gunpowder River Report

The Gunpowder River has been a popular place around the holidays for many people to get out and fish. Visiting anglers from New Jersey, Colorado, Texas, Kansas, South Dakota and Alabama made a point to stop in the shop over the holiday, on the way to the river. Cold nights and the cold surface water spillover at Prettyboy Dam has kept river temps colder than normal, but the amount of spillover is dropping. While recent reports from many anglers have detailed tough fishing, emails of successful outings including pics of nice browns relay that the trout are feeding! Bigger nymphs have been found by both …

Gunpowder River 08′ Shocking Survey Results

Thanks to Maryland Fisheries Service biologists Charlie Gougeon, Susan Rivers and Dennis Genito from Baltimore County DEPRM for stopping in the shop a few weeks ago to give an informational talk about Angler’s prevention methods for Invasives like Didymo and whirling disease. At the close of the meeting, Charlie shared results from the latest 2008 shocking survey. Backwater Angler intern Alex McCrickard provided the pictures for this post. The Gunpowder Falls was surveyed in 2008 at the Dam/Falls station, the Masemore Road Station and the Blue Mount station as part of the annual DNR Fall trout survey. Many interested folks came out to watch or …

Gunpowder Tributary Fly Fishing

Thanks to Stu Cohen for the following stream report and picture Theaux, Glad I stopped by the shop last Sunday, always fun hanging out in the warmth of the new digs after a morning of cold fishing. Well, the day was productive. The water was moving fast on the GP, so I decided to head over to the Little Falls and some of its tribs. Managed a few nice browns and this big boy. Who says our streams don’t have big browns?! Caught on a double-bead pheasant tail (#12) – seems like a big nymph, but it was my weighed fly (lost my dropper and …

Gunpowder River at a Great Level for Fly Fishing

This is what the Gunpowder river at Masemore Rd access looked like on Friday morning at 687 CFs. This morning it is an “ideal level” at 132 CFS, is clear and 49 F. Through the weekend Gunpowder regulars took advantadge of the dropping water levels on Saturday and Sunday and tried their luck fishing heavy streamers and nymphs as the river leveled out. The Gunpowder river looks like this today. BWO’s have been coming off most afternoons between 2:00 and 4:00 PM, until then, try small traditional streamers on a dead drift under an indicator along cut banks and nymph the riffles and flats with …
