Trico Hours at Backwater Angler Extended…We’re open at 8:00 AM Saturdays and Sundays through September

The Gunpowder river is flowing at 68 CFs is 56 F and is gin clear. I walked upstream on the trail Monday evening after work and found dozens of fish rising to a steady midge hatch. Pushing through the big ferns and spiderwebs that framed the overgrown trail, I passed only two other anglers before finding dozens of fish taking midges with abandon. The Herons were conspicuously absent. A lone Kingfisher quietly weaved and bobbed through the Sycamores. Moving quickly upstream, the bird, intent on taking everything in, shared only a trill that bounced through the mist that softens the big boulders and jams this …

Clouds Of Tricos On The Gunpowder River, Maryland

The Trico Mayflies are still hatching in big numbers on the Gunpowder despite making their first appearance over a month ago. Recent reports from anglers and guides mention pods of steadily, rising trout during mid morning hours throughout numerous stretches of river. While many recent guide trips have resulted in steady action and great days on the water, the fishing is far from easy. Commonly known as the Angler’s Curse, tricos are not a favorite hatch amongst all anglers, due the tiny size and big numbers of the adults. Few anglers can deny how eager the trout are to rise to these bugs once they …

Adirondack Fly Fishing on the Ausable River, New York

I recently spent a vacation with my girlfriend in the Adirondacks in New York. We were fortunate to experience great weather, views and river flows all week. The water was at Spring levels and in the low sixties on the West Branch of the Ausable, which is where I spent a few hours fishing each day. The West Branch of the Ausable River reminded me a lot of the Savage and the North Branch Rivers with endless rapids, chutes and pocket water areas. The first few days I tested the water with snow shoe rabbit winged dries, which have a storied history on these waters. …

Fly Fishing in Germany for Trout and Grayling

Thanks to Joe Seman for the following fly fishing report from Germany. Hi Theaux. I’m glad to see that you are settled in to the new location. I hope the shop continues to prosper. Given our unusually dry summer, I haven’t been out as much on the water here in Germany as I would normally be. I took a trip to South Bohemia to fish the Vltava (Moldau) river in June, and I’ve had a few good days on my local water near Frankfurt. I’ve attached a couple of photos. The town is Rozmberk nad Vltavou, where we stayed and fished, though the river was high …

Fly Fishing the Gunpowder River Labor Day Weekend

The river is flowing at 72 Cfs, is clear, and is 58F. Tricos are still present in the flats from Falls Rd through Bunkerhill most mornings. Caddis in the #16 range have been peeling off by afternoon and are a sure bet in the riffles. Small streamers along undercut banks will produce fish. Be on the lookout for Wild Turkeys and Blue Winged Olives in the upper catch and release section of the Gunpowder River on cloudy, warm days. If you need a few we have some dynamite Hi-Vi Biot-Bodied, BWO Para-Spinners tied in Calicoon, NY by Mike Bachkosky that are worth a look–especially if …

Flyfishing with Tricos in Maryland

After some passing afternoon thundershowers this week, the Gunpowder river is low at 75 CFs, gin clear and 56 F. Walking across Bush Cabin run and down the trail littered with rain soaked ferns, I witnessed fresh raccoon prints in evidence and a lone box turtle shell that no longer held it’s owner. Along the riverbank, Monarch Butterflies gingerly jockeyed for posistion on tufts of Joe-Pye Weed, while bees dove into the pink masses of pollen. Songbirds were also doing their part, nervously flitting from treetop to treetop snapping at Tricos. The trout would have to wait a bit longer to breakfast. The river IS …
