I fished the river last Monday for the majority of the day. I fished in the Upper Catch and Release section and started at around 8 in the morning. As sunlight seeped through the trees and reflected over the water, the Gunpowder River seemed to be an excellent place to be prospecting for wild brown trout. All morning, Caddis were sporadically coming off in size #16 as the sun warmed the water. I saw many midges in sizes #20-24 hatching in the riffle water. Father’s Day on the Gunpowder River

The Gunpowder river is flowing at 75 Cfs and is a cool 54 F. The fly fishing along the Gunpowder has been much better most mornings, as the fish are keying in on small nymphs, (#18-20) in the upper river before 11:00 AM. Caddis and Sulphurs have also been producing by midday but the hatches have slowed down a bit. Spinner Falls have been spotty, but still worth a late look. Streamers have also been getting a lot of attention, especially in the stretch downstream of York Rd. A good report this morning from Jeff pointed to lots of takes on small caddis and craneflies. …

Gunpowder River Stream Report -Up and Down, Sulphurs, Caddis and Rainbows…

The Sulphurs aren’t the only things going up and down in Hereford. Water levels this week have dropped from a high on Wednesday of 346 Cfs, (think limited wading and large streamers in the upper catch and release section), to the high 170 Cfs range Friday. With a recent gate change expect the gauge to look like a zig zag line for the next day or so but water levels should still be on the downswing, and very fishable by today. Expect to see the river in the mid to high 100’s (Cfs) throughout the weekend. Water temps have been in the low 60’s (F) …

Big Brown Trout, Great Flows and Sulphurs On The Gunpowder River

In this video short, Jason du Pont shows some aggressively “rising” trout, evening duns on the water, fishing to evening risers, and last but not least, he shares some footage of a big brown that Gunpowder regular, Matt Devlin, recently released. The month of May offered great flows and the exciting start of our annual Sulphur hatch. In June, with water levels at an optimal level, the sulphurs are hatching in good numbers, and fish are still keying on these bright yellow to pale cream bodied bugs. PrettyBoy Spillover in time for the Sulphur Hatch

The latest video post from Jason du Pont shows water building behind the dam this past week. Spillover points to excellent dry fly fishing. The river has moved up slightly from 41 Cfs to 50 Cfs. A recent gate change from 55ft to 15ft has warmed up the water a bit, coupled with spillover today, stream temps have moved up from the mid 50’s to closer to 60 throughout the catch and release section and fish are snapping at Caddis and Sulphurs. Now would be a great time to call the kid down the block and have him cut the grass…
