Gunpowder River Stream Reports Aplenty…

The Gunpowder river is flowing at 74 Cfs, is 61 F and is clear. Today we’ve heard from several anglers that are still finding Sulpurs in the morning followed by caddis and even a few blue winged olives midday. Most of these dries are in the #18-22 range. Ants and beetles are also part of the morning mix with hoppers and larger terrestrials accounting for fish during the late afternoon hours. It’s certainly hot enough for a spinner fall, so consider fishing emergers, cripples and para-spinners towards dusk till dark. Don’t leave home without 7x tippet. Thanks to Caleb Reinhold, Matt Stephens, & Michael Mass …

Gunpowder River Low and Clear after a Tornado Warning

The sky turned green yesterday as I was slinging the last of the mulch. I ducked inside the house as the trees swayed and the heavy rain pushed through the old windows. On the river the tribs swelled, the gauge moved-but only briefly to 145Cfs, and is now back down to 34 Cfs.Water temps are still cool at 53 to 55 F throughout the catch and release section. Most of the spikes we see after a heavy rain are skewed from runoff from the Falls bridge on the upstream side of the gauge so spikes really don’t give one a clear picture of actual stream …

The Savage River and the North Branch of the Potomac Fly Fishing Report

The Savage River: The river was fishing slow this week in Western Maryland. Levels were down between 50-75 CFS and warming to 56-59 degrees midday at the uppermost bridge access. Hatches were coming off great, but the fish were only rising to midges size #22-26 in the flat pools. Pounding the pocket water was surprisingly ineffective despite an abundance of size twelve March Browns, Sulphurs and Cahills in the early afternoon. Caddis, Blue Wing Olives, Craneflies and smaller mayflies were hatching midday in small numbers. Gypsy Moth Caterpillars were everywhere on the river, and two trout rose to ones I saw fall into the water. …

Gunpowder River is Clear, Low and Cold

The river is flowing at 37 Cfs, is low , clear and cold at 58 F. Loch Raven is spilliing over, so we’ll see low water in the river for awhile–at least until it rains. Sporadic caddis and sulphurs are still about. Try #14 caddis and emergers paired with a #16-18 Sulphur in shaded riffles and hold on. With 95 F forecasted for downtown Baltimore today, fly fishing the sulphur spinner fallĀ for wild brown trout is worth a shot. Rusty and para-spinners in a #14-16 on 7-8X in flats and edges should account for a few fish looking up.Mornings have been productive with small caddis …

Wild Brown Trout taking Rusty Spinners on the Gunpowder River

Thanks to Scott for the following Stream Report: Theaux, Hey guys I saw your most recent stream report today but not before I hit the river last night where I stepped in to some unexpectedly cold water. I parked at the upper lot and went toward the dam. It was flowing pretty good but was easily manageable. I did not get to the river until 7:30. Sulphers started buzzing around at about 8pm, but the fish still were not looking up. At 8:30 they finally took my size 16 rusty spinner. I landed 6 browns of varying sizes, all in the same stretch of water, …
