Gunpowder River Mid-November Stream Report

The Gunpowder River is flowing at 113Cfs, is 54 degrees F and is clear. Fall is in full swing here on the Gunpowder and the river is fishing well. We are finding that the fish are starting to move into the riffles. Heavy jig style nymphs and streamers have been most effective as of lately. Falls Rd has been a great section but, be sure to use caution when accessing with the slippery rocks. York Rd has also been productive with much easier access. Be sure to swing by the shop to get geared up for your next outing on the river. We still have …

Gunpowder River Fly Fishing Report

The Gunpowder RIver is flowing at an ideal 76 Cfs and 58 degrees F. Leaves are falling and fouling larger nymphs so try a few smallish, #16-18 soft hackles in the riffles. The first frost did little to knock out the crickets and hoppers so terrestrials are still worth a shot. Longer (10-12 ft) and lighter leaders ending in 6 or 7x will make a difference out there. That said, if one is “head hunting” larger fish-go heavy and consider picking up a 5 to 10ft sinking poly leader leader from Airflo and attaching 2 1/2 to 3ft or 4x Flouro tippet to guide the …

Gunpowder River Fishing Report

The Gunpowder River has been flowing at 38cfs and the temperature is 58 degrees. The river has been fishing well with these lower flows. Easer wading has opened up some of the hard to access areas as well. Flies such as the Pheasant Tail, Prince Nymph, Copper John, and Zebra Midge have been fishing well. We recommend using a dry dropper style set-up as well. Dries such as a Parachute Adams or a Royal Wulff have been most effective with the dropper 12 to 20 inches off the back. Make sure to stop in the shop to pick up some flies and check out …

Limited Access To The Gunpowder After Heavy Storms

Following the violent thunderstorms on Monday evening, access to the Gunpowder is limited. The Bunker Hill lots will most likely not be accessible throughout the weekend due to down trees. The access at Masemore Road is also limited as there are trees down on the Mt. Carmel side of the bridge. While on the river, it is very important to monitor the trees surrounding you as there are many loose or weakened branches that are still falling around the river. If you’re planning fishing this weekend, just be conscious of where you’re standing as falling branches are not something to mess with. Despite the rough …

Early August Fishing Report

It’s just past midsummer and it is hot outside. The river has been fairly empty of fisherman many of whom are out of town or wish to avoid the heat. We here at Backwater thoroughly discourage this position. The weather has been fairly pleasant as of late and the fish are very active in the early morning and late evenings. When we get morning Caddis’ hatches the Gunpowder can be incredibly productive. We highly suggest taking some time to do some early morning dry fly fishing. While the heat may be oppressive during midday, the river and nearby banks are far cooler than many assume. …

Gunpowder Fly Fishing Report: Late July

With Summer in full swing the fishing in the gunpowder has been great. Flows are still low at 34 cfs with temperatures ranging in the mid to high 50s at falls road. Anglers have had lots of success fishing with small caddis, beetles, and ants. These have been particularly effective throughout the mornings while targeting the riffles. Beetles and ants will continue to be productive into the fall and anglers will have the most success along the larger rocks, trees, and brush that lay in the gunpowder. With a bright sun and low water, it is important to minimize your wading and maximize your leader …
