Winston BIIx Review and Fly Fishing Report from Slough Creek, Yellowstone National Park

Thanks to Bob Hammer for the picture from Slough Creek in Yellowstone National Park, the fishing report and the Winston BIIX rod review. Theaux and staff, I have been out west, breaking in my new Winston Boron IIx rod purchased at the shop. It has performed wonderfully. Thanks for your help. The biggest fish of the trip was this 20″ cutt caught on Slough Creek in Yellowstone National Park. I spotted it cruising along the bank away from me. By the time I got my fly off the keeper, I had lost sight of it. I saw it again after it turned around and came …

Choosing a Bamboo Fly Rod

The emergence of the Sweetgrass Rod Company has spurred yet another round of interest in bamboo fly rods and each week we answer dozens of questions from folks who are starting to give bamboo a look. With the price of high quality graphite rods climbing higher and higher, a fine bamboo rod is no longer out of reach and to some they are starting to seem downright affordable. So with that I thought it would be useful to create a small primer for those looking to purchase their first bamboo rod. This will by no means be a complete “how-to” but it should point someone …

St. Croix Imperial Fly Rod Review

Thanks to Ben for the gear review on the St. Croix Imperial fly rod penned earlier this Summer. Theaux, This past weekend was a fantastic experience in Western Maryland. I started my morning by trying out my new St. Croix Imperial Fly Rod. The 7 ft 3 wt rod was the perfect tool on the small brookie streams that are in abundance near theSavage tailwaters. This rod works magic for the close in fishing that brook troutstreams demand. Whether it was flicking a hopper or twitching a caddis, thisfast action, lightweight rod delivered pinpoint, delicate presentations that had brook trout pouncing on my flies all …

Paul Young Perfectionist Taper Bamboo Fly Rods by Dean Turner

Dean Turner formerly of Monkton, Maryland now resides in CT, a state also known for a few trout streams. He’ll will be swinging by the shop this Thursday to show off his wares. Even with the resurgence of Bamboo that anglers are currently enjoying he’ll never be accused of beating his chest. Dean keeps a low profile and we like it that way. In fact, the rods he quietly delivers to us, leave the shop very quickly. Each model features unique taper designs with swelled butts that make these rods very powerful indeed. They are ideal rods for the angler just “moving into” bamboo. All …

Fly Fishing Report: Wassilla, Alaska

Thanks to Charles for the Alaska Fly Fishing Report. Hey Theaux, Alaska was fun. I was disappointed with the lack of “fly” fishing opportunities along the famous waters of the Russian and Kenai rivers. It seems like everyone owns a fly rod but no one wants to fly fish. Disgusted with the thousands of people standing on the banks snagging passing fish, we hopped on a boat and were dropped off at up the Susitna drainage on a river called Clear Creek. There I had great fun catching Jack Kings which were the only salmon I found that would actively pursue my fly. I caught …
