Hendricksons, Hendricksons, Hendricksons…

If you’re still letting the weather forecast dictate your fishing time you will be hearing about how wonderful the fishing has been without experiencing it firsthand. The river is at 85 CFs, clear and warming at about 52 F. We’ve had good mid-day hatches of Hendricksons with many of these early mayflies returning to the water as spinners by 4:00 PM. Plenty of midge activity is still happening above Falls Rd. Olives are a good bet through the weekend. As long as it warms up a bit and we have cloud cover the fishing will be outstanding. Earlier in the week we had a group …

Excellent early season fishing awaits…Black Fly Redux..

It’s still hard for me to to believe that we’ve had such great early season fishing during the past two weeks. The river is at a nice steady 76 Cfs , ( we typically fish it from 55 to 225 CFs so if it moves a little over the weekend it should still be clear and very wadeable-just bring your rainjacket along. We’ve had warmer water this week after a gate change from the 55 foot level to the 10 foot level. With a little spillover, the river temps are now in the mid 40’s and climbing–think active fish!!!We’ve heard many enthusiastic reports of between 1/2 …

Black Fly Bonanza…

If you listened to the weather last night and decided to pass on the Gunpowder you should feel cheated. The river is in great shape. Flows are stable at a great level for wading and the water is clear. We’ve heard from several anglers this afternoon that today was, “the best day they’ve had in a while”. We had two guides out with happy clients today that picked up plenty of wild fish on black fly and midge patterns. Small caddis and henryville specials used as point flies helped folks stay in contact with the tiny patterns. The water is warming upo and we should …

Stoneflies & Snowflies…

The river is in great shape. It’s clear and at a comfortable level for wading. Little black flies, (aka: snowflies) in the flat water above Falls have been creating quite a stir, especially if you like to cast to rising fish. Further downstream, Black Stoneflies have been very active from Bunkerhill through Big Falls. Try a #14 black caddis or #14-16 quill winged stone pattern in the riffles around log jams and deadfalls.Small bead heads in the #18-22 range behind a #14 Red or Orange butt are a great combination when covering water on windy days. Fish the transistion between riffles and flats and start …

Nymphs in the wind…Rainbows on the line

Nymphs have been working fine above Falls RD. Solid reports of fish taking #14-16 caddis larva trailed by #18-20 bead head pheasant tails since Tuesday have raised a few eyebrows. Rainbows well over 12″ are becoming pretty standard fare. If you’re hoping for dry fly action start early as the windy stuff usuallly picks up by afternoon. Bwo’s and Adams patterns in back eddies and soft water along the edges should move a few fish. Note: We still have a couple of spaces left in this Saturdays’ Hendrickson life cycle class. It starts at 10:00 AM and ends at 1:00PM. Learn how to ties nymphs, …

A 15″brown for his efforts…

Guide Capt. Jeff Lewatowski just left the Falls Rd lot with ice on his waders. He managed to release a 15″ fish and two smaller ones for his efforts this afternoon. The river is at 2.1 on the stick and is clear and at a good level for wading. With clouds in the forecast and maybe a little snow over the weekend, dress for the weather and try a few olives, sized #20-22 and little black and early brown stoneflies #14-16. We still have lots of Patagonia capilene, socks, balaclavas and fingerless gloves in the shop for the diehards out there willinging to give Winter …
