Fly Fishing SW Alaska

Thanks to Louis Kovacs for the following report from a mid-August fly fishing trip in SW Alaska. Guys, I find myself, this month, in Bethel, Alaska, for some medically related stuff. It’s not picture-book Alaska, it’s the tundra. No trees, no mountains. But both, along with some fantastic lakes and streams, full of trout and salmon of all kinds, are reachable in a few hours by boat or float plane. It’s an incredible experience, being in a plane so small it feels like you’re wearing it, landing on crystal clear glacial lakes surrounded by mountains, hiking through bear trails passing all too freshly eaten salmon …

Low Water, Rain and a Chance of Spillover along the Gunpowder River

The Gunpowder river is flowing at 29 Cfs, is 52 F and is clear. BWO’s sized #18-22 have been accounting for a few fish in the flats and pools with most of the fish keying in on emergers. Caddis in the #16-18 range are still a good bet in riffles between Bunkerhill Rd. through Falls Rd access. Small streamers like Matukas and Black Nosed Dace are also worth a shot. If this rain keep up, we might see a little more flow downstream of Bush Cabin Run where this picture was taken. Because the Gunpowder is largely protected from runoff in the “upper,” (Catch and …

Fresh Steelhead in a Fly Fishing Report from the Salmon River, NY

Thanks to Gary Corriero for the following fly fishing report from the Salmon River, NY. Hey Theaux, Jason, A couple of pictures from my trip to New York’s Salmon river week ending 10/31. I purposely moved the trip up a week to avoid November’s bad weather. As you can see by the first picture…it didn’t work out the way I planned. That’s the 7wt Scott E2 and Lamson Velocity reel you sold me last year. I didn’t break out the new 6wt Scott S4 because the water was running high and I needed a bit more power to control the fish. Despite the weather, not …

Fly Fishing Yellowstone National Park

Thanks to Roman Kostrubiak for the following picture of one of the Park’s 10, 000 hydrothermal features and post from a Yellowstone National Park fly fishing trip taken in late September: Theaux, Rocky, and Jason, My trip to Yellowstone Park was quite eventful. We drove up in cloudy cool and quite overcast conditions.I fished the Firehole River in the Fountain Flats area with a very intense baetis hatch going on. Unfortunately my fly box had nothing in it to match the #22-24 bugs covering the surface of the water. My only success came from swinging a soft hackle downstream. During the evening, the intermittent drizzle …

Scott Fly Rods in Maryland Prove Lucky

Thanks to Bill Feiss for the following: Theaux, Sorry for the delay in this note. I wanted to thank you all for the search and retrieve of my new Scott 2wt. rod and reel. I ducked out of the shop armed with my new stick and went directly to the Big Falls Rd. jump in on the Gunpowder for an hour of fishing. It lasted three. Did you know there is no cell connection down there? At least that is my story and my date seems to have bought it, for now! After fighting off those cute but annoying little fingerling brownies, I finally hooked …
