The Gunpowder River is waking up! Gunpowder River flows are at an ideal 97 Cfs and water temperatures are swinging between 49.1 and 52 degrees F. Midge activity has been consistent in the afternoons. Plan on finding quite a few young of the year sipping and sometimes splashing in the foam lines. Nymphing is still tough owing to the potential for fouling on Didymo so if you’re using weight, check your rig frequently. Fish are looking up enough to be tricked by small dries and emergers in the #18-20 range and use longer leaders ending in 6 and 7x-especially in the flats and pools. The …

The Gunpowder River is flowing at 59.9 CFs and is swinging between 46.4 and 48.4 degrees F. Stoneflies, midges, and the first reports of Mayflies are getting around. A cloudy, threatening rain kind of day, is much better for fishing than golf. Trails are in great shape so use them to focus on the riffles and stay out of the flats. The Gunpowder is at 31 cfs and 46 degrees and climbing. The fishing has been good despite the low water. Fishing higher up in the river seems to be producing more fish than the lower river. We expect the fishing to pick up these next few days with warmer weather and increasing flows. Fishing patterns such as a grey waltz worm and a pheasant tail as a double nymph rig has been working best. On Tuesday, December 17th the water levels at the dam reduced from 60cfs down to 38cfs. With this, expect a greater fluctuation in the water temperatures. On warmer days you may be able to find some fish rising to midges or blue wing olives, but you can expect them to be rather picky. Long leaders and light tippet are the way to go when targeting these fish. To cover water, small streamers and light nymph set up is effective in the deeper and faster water. Water temps have been hovering around is 50.9 F and with higher flows will not likely warm up much throughout the day. Fishing streamers? The Gunpowder is still moving at an average of 56 CFS with a steady temperature around 50 degrees Fahrenheit. Furthermore, water height has stayed consistent from our last report at about 1.72ft deep. Water clarity is currently very high, and it is important to remember that the trout can see you far better than you can see them. Long leaders of 9ft or more are a staple of these conditions.
