The river is flowing at 37 Cfs, is low , clear and cold at 58 F. Loch Raven is spilliing over, so we’ll see low water in the river for awhile–at least until it rains. Sporadic caddis and sulphurs are still about. Try #14 caddis and emergers paired with a #16-18 Sulphur in shaded riffles and hold on. With 95 F forecasted for downtown Baltimore today, fly fishing the sulphur spinner fall for wild brown trout is worth a shot. Rusty and para-spinners in a #14-16 on 7-8X in flats and edges should account for a few fish looking up.Mornings have been productive with small caddis and wets dropped behind beetles and small hoppers.
If you’re worried about low flows, try the two fish a day section from Blue Mount downstream to the red posts that mark the gas line between Corbett and Upper Glencoe Rd. You’ll find more water to wade and fly fish just downstream of the confluence of Little Falls and more varied fishing. It’s not uncommon to pick up a smallmouth, sunfish or sucker along with wild browns and stocked rainbows down that way. Speaking of which, we heard from Fisheries this week that they placed 150, (that’s one hundred and fifty) 3lb, (three pound) rainbows in the lower river last week. These fish are hungry and like big patterns like bunny leeches, #4-8 and humpies sized #6-10.
