Water Levels in the Gunpowder are not likely to change, at least until we get some measurable rain and folks start conserving water, so get out there and try your luck. We had four guide trips on the river on Columbus day with great catches reported. Because of the high flows, the river was flowing at 299 CFs at 58 F this morning, and a few adjustments are in order to get out there and be successful.
1. Limit your wading.
2. Use alot of weight.
3. Use a 5wt or 6wt rod.
4. Bring along a wading staff.
5. Limit your wading.
Small streamers cast in the flats, or what’s left of them, should be twitched towards the fast water. Sink-tips are not out of the question and work well in the 5ft to 10 ft range to keep the flies rolling through the heavy current. Point flies on double nymph rigs in a copper John or pheasant tail pattern followed by a #18-20 midge or brassie have been the most effective setups. Stop in the shop if you should have any questions on how best to rig up to cover the water, and be careful out there!
